Freesia, named after the German botanist Friedrich Freese, is a plant native to southern Africa, with funnel-shaped flowers and a scented, citric smell, stronger for the red and pink ones, that relaxes and eliminates stress. In its natural environment it blooms in spring but, due to extensive cultivation, is available year-round. In the Victorian era, Freesias were offered to symbolize trust. At mid-twentieth century white Fressia gained popularity as wedding flowers, signifying innocence and purity. Colorful bouquets of Freesia are used to convey thoughts of friendship, trust and kindness or to bring thanks to a someone special.
